What are “CAN, COULD, MAY, MIGHT, MUST, WILL, SHALL”?
-> They are modal verbs.
What are “DO, DOES, HAVE, HAS, AM, IS, ARE”?
-> They are auxiliary verbs.
Example
A: Can you speak English?
B: Yes, I can.
-> We will study “weak and strong forms of some modal verbs and auxiliary verbs”.

b. Rules
Weak form of auxiliaries is often used in interrogative sentences and in spoken languages.
Strong form is often used in short answer, statements and when they are quoted.

Example
Ex 1: A: Can you speak English? /kən/
B: Yes, he can. /kæn/
Ex 2: We use “can” /kæn/ in simple present tense and “could” /kud/ in simple past tense.

= He didn’t come though he had promised to come.
= Despite / In spite of having promised to come, he didn’t come.
