The Past Subjunctive
(Quá khứ giả định)
Là hình thức không có thật ở hiện tại và quá khứ. Quá khứ giả định xuất hiện trong:
1. Câu điều kiện loại 2, loại 3
Eg: If I had money, I would buy a new car
If I had met him yesterday, I would have said goodbye to him
2. Cấu trúc:
It’s time
It’s about time + S + Ved (P1)
It’s high time (Be = were)
(Đã đến lúc ai đó phải làm gì)
Eg: It’s about time you worked harder
3. Cấu trúc với: as if / as though: như thể, như là
a. S +V(Hiện tại thường) + as if / as though + S + Ved (P1)
(Be= were)
Eg: She loves me as if she were my mother
b. S +V(Quá khứ thường) + as if / as though + S + had + Ved (P2)
Eg: She talked as though she had met him before
4. Cấu trúc: would rather
S + would rather + S + Ved (P1) (Ai đó thích ai đó làm gì hơn)
(Be = were)
Eg: I would rather you stayed at home
(TôI thích Bạn ở nhà hơn)
5. Cấu trúc Điều ước
a. Điều ước cho hiện tại và tương lai
S + wish (that) + S + Ved (P1)
(Be= were)
Eg 1. I don’t live in HCM now-> I wish I lived in Ho Chi Minh City now
2. Andrew isn’t here now-> I wish Andrew were here now
3. I can’t play the piano -> I wish I could play the piano
*Chú ý: Chúng ta sử dụng cấu trúc: S + wish (that) + S + would + V(infinitive)
trong những trường hợp sau:
- Nếu có mốc thời gian cụ thể trong tương lai
Eg: He will not visit me tomorrow -> I wish he would visit me tomorrow
- Nếu không hài lòng với thời tiết hiện tại và mong muốn nó thay đổi theo ước muốn của mình
Eg: It’s raining -> I wish It would stop raining
The weather is bad -> I wish the weather would be better
- Không hài lòng với tính cách của ai đó và mong muốn họ thay đổi theo ý mình
Eg: He often gets home late at night -> I wish he wouldn’t get home late at night
You are making so much noise -> I wish you wouldn’t make so much noise
b. Điều ước cho Quá khứ
S + wish (that) + S + had + Ved (P2) (Điều ước trái ngược với Quá khứ)
Eg: I didn’t know you were ill -> I wish I had known you were ill
I went to bed late last night -> I wish I hadn’t gone to bed late last night
@Chú ý: If only = I / We wish: Ước gì: Eg: If only you were here now Ước gì anh ở đây giờ này
* Một số cấu trúc cần lưu ý:
1. would rather do smt than do smt = prefer doing smt to doing smt
= would prefer to do smt rather than do smt (Thích làm gì hơn làm gì)
Eg: I would rather stay at home than go to the cinema
= I prefer staying at home to going to the cinema
2. Prefer smt to smt: Thích cái gì hơn cái gì Eg: I prefer coffee to tea
3. would prefer
would like smb to do smt (Muốn ai đó làm gì) Eg: I would like you to sweep the floor
