FOOD IRRADIATION
2
What is food irradiation?
FOOD IRRADIATION is the use of ionizing radiations
for illuminating to food in order to kill viruses bacteria,
fungi, and insects,.. prolongs the life of food and prevents
fruits and vegetables from ripening too fast.
Several energy sources can be used to irradiate food :
-gamma rays
-electron beams (beta rays)
-X-rays
3
Bactericial mechanisms
When the radiation interacts with matter, it will cause ionization.
When the DNA molecules are ionized, the link between them
is fractured.
If the bare irradiation is used,
pieces of DNA will not
recover again and the
cells will be destroyed,
the disease carrying
microorganism can
not be developed.

It is still a
relatively
Expensive
technology.
It can only
be used on
a very
limited
range of
foods.
Vitamin E
Levels can
be reduced
by 25% after
irradiation and
vitaminC
by 5-10%.

It is
ineffective
against
viruses
6
Food before irradiation was processed in hygienic conditions, reached
quality according to the correlative standard.
Requirements for irradiated food
Food shall not be irradiated again except: cereals, legumes, dried
foods and other similar goods, which are irradiated with purpose of
controlling the insect reinfection or inhibiting germination.
Just being allowed circulating on the market the kinds of irradiation
food have food labeling sufficiently as specified in Article 10 of this
regulation.

Food before and after irradiation must be packed in the same
packaging.
Irradiated food must be stored in accordance with provisions such
as food has not been irradiated.
On the packaging of food were irradiated, apart from the required
information under the provisions of the legislation on food labeling
there must be had the words "Food Irradiation" or the label for
identification of food irradiation.

As of August 1999, over 30 countries are irradiating food for
commercial purposes.
Today, heath and safety authorities in over 40 countries have
approved irradiation of over 60 different foods, ranging from
spices to grains to be deboned chicken meat, do beef, to fruits
and vegetables.
