Part I: General information about the course

Course aims and objectives
1. General goals of learning:
Our course is aimed to:
to help learners develop key skills in the correct use of English for reading, writing, speaking and listening. There is an emphasis on communicative activities.
to help learners develop a natural and accurate style of English pronunciation.
to improve learners’ ability to understand and use vocabulary and expression common to everyday life.
to help learners improve their understanding of key aspects of English grammar, structures, skills.
2. Specific objectives:
This syllabus is designed for a course of approximately 30 class hours of instruction and takes learners from the verb “to be” through present, continuous forms as well as other basic structures such as subject and object pronouns, this, that, these, those, possessive…
3. Level of English learners
This syllabus is designed for “false” learners. Most learners in this course are adult learners. Each group of 5 lessons is followed by a planned review lesson which allows students a chance to review what they have learnt. This syllabus can be adapted to fit learners’ needs and is presented as a basic on which to build an elementary level in ESL English course.
4. Level of motivation
Intermediate - level
“False” learners are typically learners
who had a few years to learn English
and are now returning to start learning again for a variety of reasons: work, travel, hobbies…
1.Teaching situation:
English is taught with a lot of communication activities, mostly worked in pairs or small groups
2. Number of learners: 20 students
3. Size: 15 m2
4. Facilities: videos, tapes, cassette players.
5. Administrators’ attitude:
Administrators should:
promote learners’ achievement
Support and develop a talented staff
Build a solid organizational structure
This course lasts in 5 weeks.
Aims
To prepare learners to communicate in English at a basic level for purposes of travelling, jobs and their lives
Objectives:
By the end of the course learners will be able to:
Have a reading vocabulary of 300 common words.
Have a listening vocabulary of 300 common words numbers up to 100
Understand simple written descriptions
Understand simple questions, statements, greetings.
Can get the gist if simple conversation in spoken English
Hold a bilingual conversation, speaking English slowly and clearly in simple words
Use and understand appropriate gestures
Have confidence to initiate conversations in English, be unafraid of making mistakes.
Part II: Syllabus content
Vocabulary
Read the passage and then do the following tasks.
John is an engineer. He lives in a flat in Manchester. He works for a big car factory in Bradford. Every morning, he often wakes up at 7 am, but he doesn’t get up until 7.15. After getting up, he has a shower and gets dressed. He always has a big breakfast with bread, eggs, and vegetable soup. After breakfast, he brushes his teeth. He leaves the house for work at 8.00 and catches the 8.15 train. On the train he reads newspaper and do the crossword. It takes him about 25 minutes to get to work. His work starts at 8.45 and finishes at 4.45 but he doesn’t go home immediately because he often plays football with his colleagues until 6.00. He goes home at 6.30. He has dinner at 7.30. After dinner, he watches T.V but he sometimes goes for a drink with his friends. He goes to bed at 11.30.

Reading and writing
1. Read two passages about Mr.Brown and Mr.Hung and then
do the tasks that follow :
“Mr. Brown is an office worker , he works in Oxford. His day doesn’t start early .He often gets up at 7:30 . He ahs a big breakfast with bread, eggs, vegetable soup. his work starts at about 9:00 am and finishes at 6:00 pm. He doesn’t go home for lunch. He usually has a big meal with his family in the evening because they just have a snack at lunch time. He often watches TV at night but sometimes , he goes to the cinema with his family ,especially at weekends. he usually goes to bed at about 11:30 pm.”
“Mr. Hung is also an office worker . He works in Ha noi. He lives with his wife and two children- a son and a daughter. He often has breakfast at six and leaves home thirty minutes after having breakfast. He takes his daughter to school on his way to work by motorbike because his daughter starts her lesson at 7:00 am and he starts his work at 7:30 am. At lunch time , he comes home to have lunch with his wife. He often has a forty five –minute- nap before coming back his office. In the afternoon , he starts his work at 1:30 pm and finishes his working day at 5:30. He comes home at 6:30 and has dinner with his family. After having dinner, he often helps his children with their learning, after that he watches TV or listens to the radio ,he often gets up at 10:30.”
Task I : Read the passages and decide whether the statements are true (T) or false (F).
Task II : Here are the questions from an interview with Mr. Hung and Mr. Brown.
1. Where do you work?
2. What time do you get up?
3. What do you often have for your breakfast?
4. What time do your start your work?
5. How many hours do you have to work a day?
