When Tom was a child, his family didn’t stay inside watching TV in hot weather. They didn’t have an air conditioner, so on the warm summer evening, they stayed outside on the porch for hours. The children played games or looked at comic books. His father relaxed in his chair and smoked his pipe. Sometimes he tried to do a crossword puzzle in the newspaper. Occasionally some neighbors visited them on the porch. Then his father stopped reading the newspaper and discussed current events with them. They argued about current social problems.
After his mother had washed the dinner dishes, she usually joined them on the porch. His parents talked about the house, the neighborhood, and them. Sometimes she peeled apples. When she finished she handed each person an apple. My family always enjoyed those summer evenings on the porch.
