2. Some British’s conservative tokens.
2.1. Driving on left - hand side.
a quarter of the world drives on the left.
Why do people drive on the left –hand side in Britain?
In the past, almost everybody travelled on the left side of the road because that was the most sensible option for feudal, violent societies.
Jousting knights with their lances under their right arm naturally passed on each other`s right, and if you passed a stranger on the road you walked on the left to ensure that your protective sword arm was between yourself and him.
A double-decker bus is a bus that has two storeys or `decks`. While double-decker long-distance coaches are in widespread use around the world, double-decker city buses are less common.
2.2. Double – decker buses.
Size of double decker buses in UKs
- In the past: The majority of double decker buses in the UK are between 9.5 metres (31 ft 2 in) and 11.0 metres (36 ft 1 in) long.
- The latter being more common since the mid-1990s, though there are three-axle 12 metres (40 foot) models in service with some operators.
- Now, double-decker coaches in the UK have traditionally been 12.0 metres in length.
The red double decker buses in London have been become national symbol of Britain.
There are certain iconic images that when seen by most people immediately bring to mind a certain place. The Eiffel Tower calls up Paris. A pyramid makes people think of Egypt. Seeing either Big Ben or a red double-decker bus almost invariably makes people think of London, England. The classic London bus is now moving into the new century with the entry into service of the first hybrid variant. The new bus is a series hybrid with a 1.9L diesel engine. The standard version of the bus uses a 7.0L engine. The diesel is used drive a generator to charge the 660V lithium ion battery pack which feeds a pair of 85kW electric motors.
2.3.1. Measurement of
time in UK.
Greenwich Mean Time
(GMT) is the time measured on
the Earth`s zero degree line of
longitude, or meridian. This
runs from the North Pole to the
South Pole, passing through the
Old Royal Observatory in the
London suburb of Greenwich
2.3. System of measurement.
2.3.2. Measurement of length in UK.
The English system is composed of a lot of very sensible length units.
1 inch = 2.54 cm
3.3.3. Measurement of temperature in UK.
Nearly everywhere in the world use celsius scale (ºC) of the temperature. But, measure of tempreature in UK is degrees Fahrenhei (ºF).
Although the British government has been trying for years to years to get British people to use the same scales as other countries, the British still use traditional measurement of temperature (ºF) .
Ex: The weather forcasters on the T.V use the celsius scale of temperature. But nearly everybody still thinks in Fahrenhei.
3.3.3. Measurement of temperature in UK.
3.3.4. Measurement of glasses of beer.
SWIFTS (25cl)
OR LARGE (50cl)
( = 1.5 pints)
1 pint = 0.57 l
Some measurement of glass of beer in the UK are a pint, half a pint, Swifts (25cl), large (50cl).
United Kingdom Law:
In the UK, draught beer must be sold in Imperial measure ( pint). United Kingdom law requires certain steps be taken to ensure that a pint of beer is indeed a pint. Selling beer in unmeasured glasses without using some other form of calibrated (đo độ chính xác) is illegal. Haft pint and one- third pint glasses are available, and are subject to the same laws.
Development at European Union Level which might cause a change in some aspect of British life are usually greeted with suspicious and hostility.
3. Does The British adapt changes?
