Welcome teachers and students to an English lesson
Verb Tense Review
Verb tense expresses the time of an event or action. In this lesson, we will review the meaning of each verb tense.
like chewing gums
I/ have a shower
eat 10 apples
watch T.V
ride a horse
read document/ sign it

*Look at the chart and make sentences as in the examples:

People traveled on horseback yesterday.
People are traveling by plane today.
People will travel in spaceships tomorrow.
He was jogging in the street when somebody stopped him and asked what time it was.
The Past progressive
The present perfect progressive
*Change the tense of the following:
They often play cards.
When I saw them,….
When I saw them, they were playing cards, ……
b) for two hours ……..
They have been playing cards for two hours. ….
c) While we were studying maths, ……………………..

The Simple Present Tense
Expresses a habit or often repeated action. Adverbs of frequency such as, often, seldom, sometimes, never, etc. are used with this tense.


He likes chewing gums.
The Present Progressive
This tense is used to describe an action that is occurring right now (at this moment, today, this year, etc.). The action has begun and is still in progress.

I am having a shower now.

The Simple Past
We use the simple past to indicate exactly when an action or event took place in the past.

He watched T.V yesterday evening.
The Past Progressive
The past progressive is used to talk about an activity that was in progress at a specific point of time in the past. The emphasis is on the duration of the activity in the past.

He was riding a horse at this time yesterday.
The Past Progressive
The past progressive is often used with the simple past to show that one action was in progress when another action occurred.
I was jogging when someone stopped him.
They were eating dinner when the neighbors stopped by for a visit.
The Present Perfect
The present perfect is used to talk about an event that began in the past and continues up to the present.
He has eaten ten apples.

Present Perfect Progressive
This tense is used to describe the duration of an action that began in the past and continues into the present.
He has been sleeping for five hours.
(He is still sleeping)

The Past Perfect
This tense describes completed events that took place in the past before another past event.
He had read the document carefully before he signed it.
