I - OVERVIEW ABOUT EDUCATION
Education in the largest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual.
In its technical sense education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another.
Etymologically the word education contains educare (Latin) "bring up", which is related to educere "bring out", "bring forth what is within", "bring out potential" and ducere, "to lead”.
Teacher in educational institutions direct the education of students and might draw on many subjects.
There is also education in fields for those who want specific vocational skills.
In addition, there is an array of education possible at the informal level.
Education is a concept, referring to the process in which students can learn something:
Instruction refers to the facilitating of learning toward identified objectives, delivered either by an instructor or other forms.
Teaching refers to the actions of a real live instructor designed to impart learning to the student.
Learning refers to learning with a view toward preparing learners with specific knowledge, skills, or abilities that can be applied immediately upon completion.
Cultural Shift in ROLE of TEACHER
VIETNAMESE CULTURE
Teacher is a respected authority figure whose viewpoint is accepted correct.
Teacher authority and knowledge is unchallenged and unquestioned.
Teacher is usually expected to have a pastoral care role.
AMERICAN CULTURE
Teacher viewpoint is seen as one viewpoint only. It is expected that students compare a range of conflicting views.
Teacher viewpoints expected to be challenged or questioned.
Teacher at tertiary institutions is not usually expected to have a pastoral care role.
II - THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VIETNAMESE EDUCATION AND AMERICAN EDUCATION.
VIETNAMESE CULTURE
Teacher is almost axclusive source of and transmitter of knowledge, guidance and assessment.
Teacher transmits information, demonstrates skills and imparts moral and social training.
AMERICAN CULTURE
Teacher is the student’s coordinator of student’s learning resources, is a critical guide, a questioner and the principal source of assessment.
Teacher analyses information and ideas within an interpritive framework and models the critical analytical approach required of students.
Teacher is instructing the students.
Cultural Shift requires by Different TEACHING STYLES
VIETNAMESE CULTURE
The lecture is the medium of teaching and is well paced, clear stepped in stages.
Teacher provides all information required through notes and use of one main text.
AMERICAN CULTURE
Class activities, class projects, field trips, interviews, class discussion, small group discussion are additional teaching strategies.
Teacher expects students to use other sources of information eg libraries, media, experts. The teacher will not provide all information required.
VIETNAMESE CULTURE
Equipment is scarce and used sparingly.
Teacher closely supervise student work.
AMERICAN CULTURE
Equipment is used regularly eg overhead projectors, whiteboards, computers, videos.
Teachers encourage independent learning and students are expected to take risks and initiatives.
VIETNAMESE CULTURE
Litte opportunity to ask questions in class sessions.
The use of one or two texts that are follwed closely.
AMERICAN CULTURE
Constant opportunity for questions and expectation that student do ask questions.
Perhaps no main text, but a teaching list is recommended. If there is a main text, it may not be closely followed.
VIETNAMESE CULTURE
Aim of teaching is simple transfer of knowledge and skills to students.
Expectation that students understand examples drawn from own culture.
AMERICAN CULTURE
Aim is independent and critical styles of thinking, the development and capacity for theorising and abstraction in the students. Sometimes the decelopment of speculative critical intelligence and expansion of knowledge base.
Expectation that students understand examples from different Western cultures.
VIETNAMESE CULTURE
The written word is seen as the truth and the goal of learning.
Pedagogy.
AMERICAN CULTURE
The written word is seen as a tool for learning.
Androgogy.
III - THE SIMILARTIES BETWEEN VIETNAMESE EDUCATION AND AMERICAN EDUCATION.
Providing basic knowledge background for students.
Using modern methods teaching.
Teachers are the instructors.
Many ways to teach.

Every culture has its characters. So are Vietnamese and American education.
Nowadays, Vietnamese education has some similarities to American.
