PET for Schools content and overview

Paper 1 Reading/Writing 1 hour 30 minutes Reading
Five parts test a range of reading
skills with a variety of texts,
ranging from very short notices
to longer continuous texts.
Writing
Three parts test a range of writing
skills.
Paper 2 Listening 30 minutes (approx.) Four parts ranging from short
exchanges to longer dialogues
and monologues.
Assessment of candidates’ ability to understand
the meaning of written English at word, phrase,
sentence, paragraph and whole text level.
Assessment of candidates’ ability to produce
straightforward written English, ranging from
producing variations on simple sentences to
pieces of continuous text.
Assessment of candidates’ ability to understand
dialogues and monologues in both informal and
neutral settings on a range of everyday topics.
Paper 3 Speaking 10–12 minutes per
pair of candidates
Four parts. In Part 1, candidates
interact with an examiner. In Parts
2 and 4 they interact with another
candidate. In Part 3, they have an
extended individual long turn.
Assessment of candidates’ ability to express
themselves in order to carry out functions at
Threshold level. To ask and to understand
questions and make appropriate responses.
To talk freely on matters of personal interest.

This handbook is for anyone who is preparing candidates for the Cambridge ESOL Preliminary English Test for Schools (PET for
Schools). The introduction gives an overview of PET and its place within Cambridge ESOL. This is followed by a focus on each
paper and includes content, advice on preparation and example papers.

Introduction to Cambridge ESOL
■ University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations
University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL)
is a part of the Cambridge Assessment Group, which is a
department of the University of Cambridge*. It has a tradition
of language assessment dating back to 1913, and is one of the
world’s largest educational assessment agencies. Cambridge
ESOL offers an extensive range of examinations, certificates
and diplomas for learners and teachers of English. In 2006 over
2 million people took these examinations at centres in over
140 countries.
Cambridge ESOL’s systems and processes for designing,
developing and delivering examinations and assessment
services are certified as meeting the internationally
recognised ISO9001:2000 standard for quality management.
Cambridge ESOL examinations are suitable for learners of all
nationalities, whatever their first language and cultural
