A ROSE OR EMILY
by William Faulkner
(1897-1962)

Was it cold, violent anger that motivated Miss Emily to deal with Homer Barron in the way she did, or was it something much more than that?
Yes, it was cold and violent anger that motivated Miss Emily to deal with Homer Barron in the way she did. But on the other hand, she did that only because Miss Emily loved Homer Barron very much. But Homer Barron tricked her love so Miss Emily only deal with Homer Barron in that way to hold him with her forever.
Miss Emily was brought up and protected unusually by her father.
For example, “all the young men had been driven away by her father”. Her father did that so Miss Emily was isolated (bị cô lập) and don’t have relation with outside. She only knew her father and depended on him. But it also effected to her sentiment (tình cảm) and her think.
Some people said she was crazy when her father died. She believed that he was alive “Miss Emily met all ladies at the door dressed as usual and with no trace of grief on her face. She told them that her father was not dead”.
She did three days just as they were about to resort to law and force she broken down and they buried her father quickly.
She can’t accept her father’s death but it was the truth so she was disappointed. That time, Miss Emily was abandoned (bơ vơ), lonely. There are only two people: Miss Emily and Negro in the house. It seem to be so lonely cold (lạnh lẽo) and quiet that the people feel afraid.

Seems she was like losing important thing in her life, everything seems to be terrible. Suddenly, Homer Barron appeared. It made her feel happy and she loved the life than. The life seems to be radiant (tươi sáng). She loved Homer Barron very much more than everyone thought.

She put all faith in Homer Barron. The first time in her life, she loved and she loved strongly. But Homer Barron tricked her love, more horribly that she liked men “it was know that he drank with young men in the Elks’Club that he was not a marrying man”.
It was her attack because she was happy and prepared to marry him “Miss Emily had been to the jeweler’s and ordered a man’s toilet set in silver with the letters H.B on each piece. Two days later, we learned that she had bought a complete outfit of men’s clothing, including a nightshirt and we said “They are married”.
But suddenly, Homer Barron left Miss Emily, it was unacceptable. Maybe, that time, she only thought how to hold Homer Barron beside her forever even killing him. Lastly, she did terrible thing, she killed him by poison but every one didn’t know that. They only thought Homer Barron have left that town.
However, we believed that she loved him because she lied with him every night like when he was alive. She is pitiful.*
Miss Emily’s action was unusual but she is so pitiful that every people said: “Poor Emily” with soft voice. When she was young, she didn’t have her parents’ love, so she loved Homer Barron strongly. It was wrong, wasn’t it ?
But because of her violent anger and strong love so she did terrible action. She only wanted to hold him beside life forever.*

We must cry and sorry for her.
“Poor Emily”.
When you love someone, you don’t hope to have betrayal (phản bội). If having, you’ll be hurtful. It’s terrible, it make your heart like broken in many pieces. Love like a fire,it is warm .But sometimes, it’s so strong that it can destroy everything.
Don’t make your love become vindictiveness.
So in love, we need to have steadfast love (lòng chung thủy) and faithfulness (trung thực).

Don’t love blindly as Emily!
Thank you -Good bye
