The Seven Wonders
of the Ancient World
So can you guys guess what it is ?
It’s the OLYMPIC GAMES
And the answer is:
According to tradition, the first Olympics took place in 776 BC, in Greece.
After that, once every four years, men from all over Greece came to compete in a great athletic festival in Elis, in Western Greece
But do you know what is the origin of this major international event ?

When and where did it start ???

The Olympics games were a religious festival to honor the most powerful Greek god:

ZEUS
To honor the god ZEUS, a spectacular temple was built. The designer was Libon of Elis and his masterpiece, The temple of Zeus, was completed in 456 BC
As the Greece grew
Something
was needed !!!
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
A magnificient statue of the King of gods was built inside the temple
Then later, this statue become one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The
Statue
of Zeus
at Olympia
When was the Statue of Zues built ?
=> built by Greeks around 457 BC

Location ??
=> In the ancient town of Olympia, on the west coast of modern Greece.
Built for what ???
=> To honor the king of gods – ZUES.

WHAT DID THE STATUE LOOK LIKE ???
His right hand:
Messenger Nike
Sat on a throne
An olive wreath on his head
His left hand :
A scepter with a eagle sitting on it
The statue was made of wood

But covered with ivory and

sheets of gold !!!
The face was made of ivory but the hair, beard, sandals, robe and scepter were made of gold.
The legs of the throne were decorated with

Sphinxes and
Winged figures of
victory
13 meters ( 40 feet )
As high as a four-story building !!!
No wonder most people described the throne – they couldn’t see higher than that !! O.o
In 391 AD, the Olympic games were banned and the temple of Zeus was closed
CLOSED !
Earthquakes, landsides, floods and fire damaged the temple
DESTROYED
The statue is now lost, but is shown on coins and gems, and described by the Greek author Pausanias
Earlier, the statue had been transported by wealthy Greeks to a palace in Constantinople (now Istanbul )
There, it survived until it was destroyed by a severe fire in AD 462. Today nothing remains at the site of the old temple except rocks and debris, the foundation of the buildings, and fallen columns.
