- Affirmative:
I/He/She/It + was
We/You/They + were
- Question:
Was I/he/she/it …?
=> Yes, I/he/she/it was | No, I/he/she/it wasn’t.
Were we/you/they …?
=> Yes, we/you/they were | No, we/you/they weren’t.
- Negative:
I / He / She / It + was not (wasn’t)
We / You / They + were not (weren’t)
Ordinary verb
- Affirmative: I/ We/ You/ He/ She/ It/ They talked
- Negative: I/ We/ You/ He/ She/ It/ They didn’t talk. (didn’t = did not)
- Question: Did I/ we/ you/ he/ she/ it/ they talk?
Short answers:
Yes, I/ we/ you/ he/ she/ it/ they did.
No, I/ we/ you/ he/ she/ it/ they didn’t.
Common time expressions used in simple past tense
Last week/ month/ year/ Monday / Tuesday / winter …

On + day in a week (Monday, Tuesday,…)
In + month / year (In March)
At + time (At 7 o’clock)
Uses of simple past
Talk about an action happened and ended at a specific point of time in the past
Ex: He went swimming yesterday morning.
Use in stories:
Ex: Last year, I went to Paris. I visited Eiffel Tower and Notre Dam Church, ate delicious food and had a wonderful time.
How to add –ed to regular verbs
Verbs ends in –e: add –d
Ex: love => loved
Verbs ends in 1 vowel + 1 consonant: double the consonant before adding –ed
Ex: stop => stopped
Verbs ends in consonant + y: cross out “y”, add –ied.
Ex: try => tried
Verbs ends in vowel + y: just add ed
Ex: play => played
Two-syllable verbs end in 1 consonant and the stress falls on the second syllable: double the consonant before adding –ed
Ex: ad’mit => admitted, pre’fer => preferred
