SECTION B: reading passages
Passage 1: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF RICE
The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2004 the International Year of Rice. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) discussed the importance of the declaration in January, and said that the UN declaration gives many nations the chance to consider food security and that technology has an important part to play in improving rice production.
Rice provides twenty percent of the world’s dietary energy - more than wheat or corn. It is a central food in the diet of a majority of the world’s population and has been called a symbol of cultural identity and unity.
4 November 2009
6
During the 1990’s, world’s rice production increased. However, production will not meet the needs of growing populations by 2030.
The economics of rice is also very important. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says developing governments often place price controls on rice. These governments have to balance two pressures. Prices need to stay low so people can buy this important food. Buy growers need prices to rise to increase their income.
Exporting can ease these pressures. Special kinds of rice may offer a way to create new export markets. Rice with qualities like good smell, unusual colour or high protein levels represent specialty products. They could provide growers with high profit crops.

Passage 3 : Read the following text and look at Questions 31-35 to decide if each statement is TRUE or FALSE.
DINOSAURS
Until 65 million years ago, a family of animals known as dinosaurs roamed the earth. Dinosaurs were for the most part terrestrial reptiles, meaning that they lived on land, and had skins covered with scales. Some dinosaurs were carnivorous (meat-eating) while others were herbivorous (plant-eating). Dinosaurs disappeared at about the same time as did a large number of other groups of species, including the microscopic organisms that created the White Cliffs of Dover in England. Perhaps the reason the dinosaurs are remembered while these other organisms are not is their immense size. For example, one type of dinosaur, the brontosaurus, weighed nearly 30 tons.
4 November 2009
12
Some dinosaurs may have lived in water.
All dinosaurs had basically the same diet.
The passage implies that the dinosaur`s diet may have been responsible for its extinction.
The passage establishes that dinosaurs disappeared for the same reason that other organisms living at the same time did.
35. The passage suggests that the disappearance of the dinosaur is more important than that of other organisms.

Passage 4: Read the following passage and choose the right answer by circling the suitable letter A,B,C, or D space in the Questions 36-40.
Insect control is only one of the problems being addressed by cooperative agricultural research teams. Besides the problem of pests, great quantities of food are lost by improper threshing methods and by poor handling, storage, and food preservation.
Fermentation and mold during wet-season crop harvesting and badly organized drying and milling facilities lose much grain. Grain dryers that work for North America may be useless in tropical climates. Grain bins designed for gentle prairie winds are no good for Africa’s blazing sun. Developing the right storage facilities for local conditions is a great need.
