Who is geisha?
Geisha means person of the art, are traditional Japanese artist – entertainments.
They are performers of dance, music, poetry that they actually spend most of their working time.

History of Geisha
The origin of geisha is female entertainers. In the late 16th century, some pleasure quarters were built in Japan, especially in Kyoto, till the mid – 1600s, they were known as Shimabara. There had 4 courtesan classes in Shimabara: Tayu, Koshi, Sancha and Hashi.

But in the mid – 18th century, there had a new tendency to entertain in Kyoto & Osaka. It’s geisha. The earliest geisha were men. Female geisha became popular more and more. They performed in ochaya and were able to steal clients from the coutersans.
Stages of Training
Traditionally, geisha began their training at a very young age. At the first time, their role in okiya was maid or assistant for experienced geishas.

A maiko will start her formal training on the job as a minarai. Before that, she must find an onesan. The onee-san`s responsibility is bring her to the ozashiki, to sit and observe as the onee-san is at work.

Appearance
Make up: The traditional makeup of an apprentice geisha features a thick white base with red lipstick. They always make up their face with white because they want to hire their feelings, and the red lipstick is symbol of sexy and charming.

Dress: Geisha always wear kimono. Maiko wear colorful kimono with big obi. Geisha wear kimono with simple style & pattern. Combine with kimono is wooden clog (okobo)

Hair: The hairstyles of geisha have varied through history. In the past, it has been common for women to wear their hair down in some periods, but up in others.
In popular culture
The growing interest in geisha and their exotic appearance have big influence to popular culture both in Japan & in the West. Especially with the 1997 novel and 2005 film Memoirs of a geisha.
