I. Complete these sentences using the six verbs from the list below. Use each verb only once.
soak up - break up - tell off - beat up - go for - calm down
1. The meeting......at ten o`clock.
2. The boys......the old man and took his money.
3. My boss......me......for being late.
4. ......! There`s nothing to worry about.
5. The carpet......the wine.
6. The madman......John with a knife.
II. Complete these sentences using the `ing` form of the verb in brackets.
e.g. I told him off for...... (not do his homework)
( I told him off for not doing his homework.
1. The teacher told her off for...... (be rude)
2. The teacher told him off for...... (eat in class)
3. I was told off for...... (not help my mother)
III. Replace the words in italics by the words in brackets. Change the word order if necessary.
e.g. They beat up my friend. (him)
( They beat him up.
1. I told her off. (Janet)
2. Let`s beat him up. (George)
3. The protesters broke up the meeting. (it)
4. The student soaked it up. (a lot of information)
5. The dog went for the postman. (him)
6. This glass of whisky will calm him down. (Phillip)
IV. Complete the passage using go for/break up/calm down.
Last night`s meeting......in disorder when a man from the audience......the chairman with a knife. It took us twenty minutes......to the man......and take his knife from him.
V. Complete the passage using tell off/soak up/beat up.
Last week, Roy had a fight with three older boys. He......a lot of punishment as they......him......and he had to go to hospital. When his mother visited him, she cried and......him......for fighting.
VI. Use the verbs in brackets to reply to the following.

Notes.
- soak up: ướt sũng, ướt đầm đìa (= absorb liquid, or water thoroughly)
- break up: tan (họp); giải tán (= be over; finish; come to an end)
- tell of: mắng; la rầy (= scold; reprimand)
- beat up: đánh túi bụi; đánh bầm giập (= hurt badly by hitting and kicking repeatedly)
- go for: tấn công (= attack)
- calm down: bình tĩnh trở lại; yên lòng đi! (= stop feeling excited, worried, upset…)
They are soaked-up.
