III/ Reported speech (Câu tường thuật)
A/ Reported statements (Tường thuật câu kể: Gồm có câu khẳng định và câu phủ định)
Động từ giới thiệu thường là: SAY (nói...) hoặc TELL (tell somebody) (nói với...)

S + + (that) + S + V (có thể bỏ từ nối “that”)
tell(s)/told sb đổi thì của động từ lùi về quá khứ 1 thì nếu động từ giới thiệu ở thì quá khứ
a) “I am very hungry,” Lan said. (Lan nói: “Tôi rất đói bụng.”)
( Lan said (that) she was very hungry.
• Bắt đầu lời tường thuật bằng Lan said; đổi đại từ I (tôi) → she (cô ta) để phù hợp với chủ ngữ là Lan;
• Đổi động từ “am” sang quá khứ là “was”
b) “I feel very hungry,” Tuan said. (Tuấn nói: “Tôi cảm thấy rất đói bụng.”)
( Tuan said (that) he felt very hungry.
• Đổi đại từ I (tôi) → he (anh ta) để phù hợp với chủ ngữ là Tuấn; đổi động từ “feel” sang quá khứ là “felt”
c) “I want to go home now.” Mai said to me. (Mai nói với tôi: “Tôi muốn thăm Mỹ Sơn.”)
( Mai told me (that) she wanted to go home then.
• Đổi đại từ I (tôi) → she (cô ta) để phù hợp với cngữ là Mai; đổi “want” sang quá khứ “wanted”; đổi now → then
d) “I don`t want to visit Hoi An now,” Linda said.
( Linda said she didn`t want to visit Hoi An then.
e) “I can fix this hair-dryer,” Nam said to Hoa.
( Nam told Hoa (that) he could fix that hair-dryer. (Đổi this → that)
f) “I must visit my uncle tomorrow,” Ba said.
( Ba said (that) he had to visit his uncle the following day.
• Đổi must thành had to; my → his; tomorrow → the following day
* Lưu ý:
1. Đổi động từ ở thì hiện tại đơn sang thì quá khứ đơn:
am/is/are → was/were; go/goes → went; want/wants → wanted am not/isn’t/aren’t → wasn’t/weren’t;
don’t/doesn’t + inf → didn’t + inf can/can’t → could/
