As of 2012, the population of Singapore is 5.312 million people.
3.285 million (62%) are citizens.
23% of Singaporean citizens were born outside Singapore.
It is 74.2% Chinese, 13.3% Malays, 9.2% Indians and 3.3% others.

About history
The history of Singapore
The name Singapore is derived from the Malay word Singapura (the Lion City). According to the myth, a prince named Sang Nila Utama saw the first creature on the island was a lion and then called the island Singapura.
The earliest known settlement on Singapore was in the 2nd century AD. It was an outpost of the Sumatran Srivijaya empire, named Temasek (sea town).
Between the 16th and early 19th centuries, it was part of the Johor Sultanate.
The history of Singapore
About 200 years ago, immigrants from all over the world started to settle in Singapore.
Singapore was soon become a British colony.
On 9 August 1965, Singapore gained independence as the Republic of Singapore.
