What could I do to improve
my speaking skill?
Speak! If you don’t practice the language, there’s no chance you will speak the language well.
Identify your problems (e.g. lack of confidence, pronunciation, …)
Set achievable goals.
What could I do to improve
my speaking skill?
Find a way to overcome them
+ Lack confidence what should I do?
+ Improve your pronunciation: learn phonemic descriptions, practise the word stress, get the rhythm right.
In the classroom…
Speak when you have opportunities. Classroom is a safe place. You’re “allowed” to make mistakes!
In the classroom…
Choose one point or two that interest you in coming lessons and practice speaking about them before you go to class. In class, you show the best of yourself because you’re prepared!
In the classroom…
Listen to the way your teacher and your friends go about different questions and situations. Learn from them!
Beyond the classroom…
Practise often with friends, ideally in pairs and in groups.
Repeat many times what you want to say in different situations (to yourself, or to others). It will come out more quickly when you’re actually in the situations.
Beyond the classroom…
Learn fixed phrases and remember to learn phrases, not just words. It saves you time of thinking when you speak.
E.g. all of a sudden; You’re not going to believe it but…; Have you heard about…?
Beyond the classroom…
Find a speaking model and try to imitate the way that person speaks, his/her intonation (your teacher, a foreign friend, the tape…).
When you speak …
Use sounds and phrases to fill the silence (e.g. hmm, well, you know, let me think, let me tell you one thing,…).
Don’t hesitate to ask for help or clarification when you get stuck.
When you speak …
Find another way to say what you mean if you can’t think of the exact word you need.
Try to record yourself speaking now. Keep this tape, then record yourself at the end of the month. Can you hear some improvement?
All in all, enjoy learning English. If you haven’t been able to speak English very well yet, at least you feel well when you speak the language!
