UNIT 8: THE STORY OF MY VILLAGE
E. WRITING
I. Objectives (Language, skills, attitude)
1. Knowledge : By the end of this lesson students will be able to:
- know the way to give directions to a certain place.
- know about vocabulary used to give directions
2. Skills
- Students know how to write a letter giving directions to a certain place
- Students know how to give directions
- Students know how to do exercises such as describing a place, guessing meaning, …
3. Attitude
- Students feel interested in the lesson with positive attitude.
- Help students know how to write about direction. Therefore, they can know how to ask and answer about direction in daily life.
II. Teaching methods:
Presentation, role play, pair work, individual work, …
III. Teaching aid
Visual aids (power point, projector, computer, speaker,…)
Textbook, chalk, board, …
IV. Anticipated problem:
- Students may have difficulty in giving directions in letters.

- Ask students watch a video related to giving directions to a certain place.
- Play a video
- After the video finishes , ask students some questions:
1. As you know we have ever learnt about many types of letter writing. So, can you guess what kind of letter we will learn today basing on this video? - Say: “Ok, today we’ll learn how to write a letter of giving directions to a certain place.
2. Who can note down some words you know to give directions?
1. TASK 1: Reading the letter
- Ask Ss study the letter and underline the words or phrases used to give directions.
- Call on Ss to give the answers.
- T introduces the situation and asks Ss to work in pairs .Find Ann‟s house on the map by reading letter again. -Note: Ss can draw the directions while discussing
• Add some ways to give directions :
Walk along, go straight ahead, keep walking, keep going.
- Check understanding: ask students look at some pictures on the slide and choose suitable directions for each picture.
• Give students the format of letter writing:
- Ask Ss to work in pairs to read the sample writing on the slide again and work out the format of the letter of giving directions.
- Call on Ss to have the format of a letter of giving directions.

2. TASK2: Asking and answering aboutdirections on the map
- Play a game -T prepares 8 pieces of papers contain directions and a map. T divides class into 2 teams. Each team will choose 4 pieces of papers to ask and answer about directions on the map in order to find where the post office, car park, petrol station, cinema, stadium, zoo, airport, hospital. The winner will be the team possesses more correct answers. - T listen and correct errors
TASK 3 : Writing a letter of giving directions
- T divides class into 3 groups to do this task. Ask 3 groups write a letter to your friend . Supposing that your house is Lovely House on the map, telling him/her the way to your house from train station.
- Tell groups to produce their own writing.
