Some general rules for using
Reported speech
Changes from direct speech to reported speech depend on changes in situation. We may have to make changes when we are reporting something another person has said, or when we report it in a different place or at a different time. Here are some typical changes.
_Tenses
After a past reporting word, we change the tense of the original sentence. Compare:
I can`t swim. ? He pretended he couldn`t swim.
I am learning French. ?She said she was learning French.
Especial cases that we don’t change tense:
Chân lí, sự thật.
Trong câu có năm xác định.
Thì quá khứ hoàn thành.
Câu thuộc các cấu trúc đã lùi thì rồi. (Ex: as if , as though, if only, wish, it is high time, would rather, conditional sentence type 2 & 3…)
_Time & Place

these ? those
now ? then
today ? that day/ on Monday
