PRETEST 2

I. Use the verbs in parentheses in their correct tense forms:
I really enjoyed the rock concert last night. I (1.go, never) to a rock concert before, so I (2. not know) what to expect. I (3.be) to symphony concerts lots of times, but never a rock concert. Ten minutes before the concert (4.suppose) to start, hundreds of teenagers (5.try, still) to find their seats. The place was a madhouse. I thought that things (6.settle) down once the concert began. Boy, was I wrong! As soon as the lead singer (7.appear) on the stage, everyone (8.start) screaming at the top of their lungs. I couldn`t hear myself (9.think). All in all, the concert (10.be) a lot of fun, but very noisy.

II. Read the passage and choose the best answer:
Surprisingly, no one knows how many children receive education in English hospitals, still less the content or quality of that education. Proper records are just not kept.
We know that more than 850,000 children go through hospital each year, and that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1,000 children in hospital.
Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher. A further quarter have only a part-time teacher. The special children`s hospitals in major cities do best; general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off.
From this survey, one can estimate that fewer than 1 in 5 children have some contact with a hospital teacher - and that contact may be as little as 2 hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all. If there was a teacher they were much more likely to read books and do maths or number work: without a teacher they would only play games.
Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind to keeping a child busy, and the latter is often all the teacher can do. The position and influence of many teachers was summed up when parents spoke of them as "the library lady" or just "the helper".
Children tend to rely on school friends to keep in touch with school work. Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored of refused by the school. Once back at school, children rarely get extra teaching, and are told to catch up as best they can.
Many short-stay child-patients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.

III. Read the passage and answer following questions:
Mozart, who was born on January 27, 1756 in the Austrian city of Salzburg, was neither the first nor the last child prodigy, but he was certainly the greatest. He was born into a moderately prosperous family where his unmatched musical genius made itself known extremely early. Mozart began learning to play the harpsichord at three and his earliest known work was composed in 1761 when he was five, the age at which he also first appeared in public. From the age of six, when his father took him on the first foreign tour, Mozart toured the courts and musical centres of Austria, German., France, England, Holland, Switzerland and Italy.
