In humankind’s millions of years on earth, many types of energy resources have been utilized. However, in the last ninety years, petroleum has become by far the most important. Accounting for over 50 percent of all energy consumed, it is so essential that, without petroleum, we could be faced with economic disaster.
Of course, the earth’s supply of petroleum will not last forever, and in fact, it will disappear sooner than most people believe. At the current rate of consumption, the world’s proven oil reserves may be exhausted within forty or fifty years.
1. __________ The passage is about energy.
2. __________ People have utilized different kinds of energy resources.
3. __________ Energy has only been used for a short time.
4. __________ Petroleum has become the most essential for more a century now.
5. __________ Without petroleum, our economies will not be affected.
6. __________ We have an endless supply of petroleum on the earth.
II. Read the following passage. Then answer the questions
We can develop alternative sources of energy, and unless we try we will never succeed. Instead of burning fossil fuel we should be concentrating on more economic uses of electricity, because electricity can be produced from any sources of energy.
If we did not waste so much energy, our resources would last longer. We can save more energy by conservation that we can produce for the same money. Unless we do research on solar energy, wind power, tidal power, hydroelectric plants ... our fossil fuels will run out and we will all freeze or starve to death.
Many countries are spending much more time and money on research because the energy from the sun, the waves and the winds last forever. We really won’t survive unless we star working on cleaner and safer sources of energy.
