Chapter 7
Local Area Network Basics
7.1 IEEE Standards
7.1.1 LAN Terminology
7.1.2 LAN Types
7.1.3 LAN Architecture
1
2
7.1 IEEE Standards
In 1982, a project group called 802 had defined network standards.
After that, IEEE 802 standards are used widely for networking.
IEEE 802 refers to a family of IEEE standards dealing LAN and MAN.

7.1.1 LAN Terminology
The LAN terminologies are:
Central Processor ~ Control and processes data, excute the instructions and not have interfaces main memory or peripherals
Microcomputer ~ is small and single user computers which is also known as Personal Computer.
Node ~ A devices are connected to a network at a particular location and are also called as stations or workstations.
Server ~ A computer system that provides access and services to other systems over a network.
5
Terminal ~ Enable the user to give input and get output of the data.
Packets ~ is a block information transmitted through the network and passes through the different layers in the network.
7.1.1 LAN Terminology
The LAN terminologies are:
Protocol ~ is the set of rules or conventions that establishes a connection and enables transmission of data between two devices
6
7.1.2 LAN Types
Ethernet
Token Ring
Token Bus
FDDI
10 Mbps
IEEE 802.3 Standards
Ring structure and transmits data around the network with the ring shape
IEEE 802.5 Standards
Uses token passing mechanism
IEEE 802.4 Standards
Like Token Ring network
Dual Ring
7
7.1.3 LAN Architecture
