1. Word often confused:
Succeed and Success
- Succeed /sзk`si:d/ :(v) attain success, reach a goal, do what one is trying to do or well.
Eg. 1.If you want to succeed in your life, you should broaden your relationships.
2. He succeeded in inventing the new power.
- Success /sзk`ses/ :(n) achievement of one’s aim, fame, wealth.
Eg. 1.Your success always depends on you.
2. Word definition:
The paddle steamer
is a ship or boat driven by a steam engine that use one or more paddle wheels to thrust for propulsion.
Paddle wheel
Two type of paddle steamer:
Side wheeler
Stern wheeler
3.Language focus:
……of steamship in providing faster and more regular services…..(p3)
……steamers has to be bigger and better than ever before…(p8)

Comparative: comparative are used when comparing one person or thing with another.
Form:
Eg. 1.
2. This book is more expensive than that one.
How to add –er to short adj and adv
( 1 syllable) ?
Be careful.
But : irregular adj
good better, far further
bad worse, little less
But : adj or adv ending in –y, -er , -ow .
easy easier , heavy heavier , early earlier
clever cleverer, narrow narrower
Eg. She is cleverer than he.
( “she is more clever than he” is also right)
Comparative can be emphasis by add
far, much, a (little) bit, a little, a lot before comparing phrase.
Eg. That car is far better than yours.
Eg. Your watch is far more expensive than mine.
Nouns can also be used in comparative.
Eg. I have more books than she.
February has fewer days than March.
Their job allows them less freedom than ours does.
