Vocab pre-teaching (not more than 8 words) :
Steps for presenting new vocab :
- eliciting : visual, mime, realia, situation/ explaination, example, synonym/antonym or translation.
- teacher’s modelling.
- choral repetition.
- individual repetition.
- checking words : meanings, pronunciation, stress, intonation.
- techniques of checking students’ understanding :
+ rub out and remember.
+ slap the board.
+ what and where.
+ matching.
Pre-reading activities :
Ordering statements.
Jigsaw dictation.
Ordering pictures.
True/False statement prediction.
Open prediction.
Skimming questions.
While-reading activities :
T/F, R/W statements.
Wh- questions.
Multiple- choice.
Gap-fill.
Grids or forms.
Matching.
Answers given.
Post-reading activities :
Wh- questions.
Gap-fill.
Role play.
Rewrite.
Discussion.
Suggested timing for each stage :
1/ Check up (or warmer instead) : 5 mins.
2/ Vocab pre-teaching : 8 mins.
3/ Pre-reading activities : 7 mins.
4/ While-reading : 15 mins.
5/ Post-reading : 10 mins.
SOME TIPS ON GIVING EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTIONS
IN THE ENGLISH CLASSROOM
1. KISS - Keep It Short and Simple.
2. Always check sts have understood by using checking questions.
3. Get every student’s attention BEFORE giving instructions.
4. Feed in your instructions step by step.
5. Maintain eye contact with the class.
6. Use gestures to convey meaning.
7. Use examples, do a couple in front of the whole class.
8. Model your instructions by yourself or with other students.
9. Pause when you give instructions. You may also need to repeat or paraphrase your instructions.
10. Always set a time limit.
11. Make sure all the sts can see and hear you.
12. Pre –plan your instructions if you are not confident.
13. Make it clear when sts can start and stop a task by giving signals (clapping your hands)
14. Give out handouts after the instructions.
15. Types of instructions: Step by step; Say, do, check , Show don’t tell ; Recall.
