Extensive Reading English Books Improves Writing Skill of Freshmen English- Major in TDU

Chapter One

Rationale

I state the problems, introduce background information and organize the thesis.

As you know, in university entrance exam, English exam do not have the part of writing, most of students only choose the multiple choice, so they think that writing skill is not important. However, if freshmen English students have a good writing skill they can graduate more easily and study other skills better. Writing is one of the most important skills for English major students.
In reality, writing skill needs a lot of factors, learners have to know how to organize the structure of paragraphs or essays, know how to write coherently… When freshmen study at Tay Do university, their teachers will teach them how to do that. However, to complete good works, they have to have knowledge enough to get new ideas and to find full information. This is one of big problems which freshmen English major in TDU have to face. Another problem is learners’ limitation of vocabulary in English because if they do not have a lot of vocabulary, they can not make their essay more exciting and perfect. The causes of these problems are that learners do not practice their reading by extensive reading English books.
Actually, reading text books is more bored than extensive reading English books. Other English books have many interesting topic about society, education, reality, so on. Extensive reading is reading for pleasure so they fell comfortable, learners can develop a naturally awareness. When learners read English book they know many ideas and have a lot of information. When they gain that point of view, they can apply them to write a new topic. Beside that readers can see how to organize ideas on the books. So they can give objective opinion and make their writing concise.
In addition, learners only often study on text books so their vocabulary is limited. It is difficult for them to remember new words on text books. They will not reinforce the amount of the learning of a word. Therefore, Learners read English books many time, they can meet new words many times. It is easy to remember new words when you see them. When they can use various words to write and they can make their writing more flexible.
Reading English books is a good ways to improve writing skill of freshmen English major in TDU. It helps writers learn grammar, vocabulary and objective opinions that they can transfer to their own writing.
This thesis consists of five chapters such as chapter one is introduction, chapter two is literature review, chapter three is research aim, chapter four is research method and chapter five is the result and conclusion.
