Halloween
Halloween (also spelled Hallowe`en) is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31.
Halloween originated as a pagan festival in parts of Northern Europe. Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is a time when magic is most potent and spirits can make contact with the physical world.
back ground
It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day ofAll Saints , but is today largely a secular celebration.
The ancient Celts believed that the border between this world and the other world became thin on Samhain, allowing spirits (both harmless and harmful) to pass through. The family`s ancestors were honoured and invited home while harmful spirits were warded off
Immigrants from Scotland and Ireland brought the holiday to the United States.
Symbols
In traditional Celtic Halloween festivals, large turnips were hollowed out, carved with faces and placed in windows to ward off evil spirits. The carving of pumpkins is associated with Halloween in North America where pumpkins are both readily available and much larger – making them easier to carve than turnips.
costume
Halloween costumes are traditionally those of monsters such as ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils.
Costumes are also based on themes other than traditional horror, such as those of characters from television shows, movies, and other pop culture icons.
food and drink
pumpkin seed
candy corn
candy apple
caramel corn
What do people do ?
Halloween is usually celebrated amongst family, friends and, sometimes, co-workers. However, some areas hold large community events. Parties and other events may be planned on October 31 or in the weekends before and after this date.
Adults may celebrate by watching horror films, holding costume parties or creating haunted houses or graveyards.
Some families carve lanterns with `scary` faces out of pumpkins or other vegetables or decorate their homes and gardens in Halloween style. These were traditionally intended to ward off evil spirits.
Traditional Halloween Games : trick or treat
Children all across America do something unusual. They put on strange clothes. They may even paint their faces to look like someone different. They walk around to different houses. They knock on the door of the house. And then they ask for a sweet candy treat !
