Some Suggested Techniques
for Presenting Structures
Dialogue
Listening/Reading texts
Pictures
Storytelling
Realia
Steps for Presenting a New Structure (1)
State the purpose of the lesson
Pre-teach vocabulary
Set the scene, introduce the characters
Present the target language in context ( by using “Explicit/ Inductive” or Implicit/ Deductive method up to each kind of student)
Check if ss have understood (using comprehension questions, recall, etc.)
Elicit the model sentence(s)
T repeats as a model
Steps for Presenting a New Structure(2)
Ss repeat chorally then individually
T writes the model sentence(s) on the B.B in a sentence
Ss copy into their books
T checks meaning, form, use and pronunciation
Practice (controlled, less controlled, free)
Some kinds of
Grammar practice/drill
Repetition drill using picture cues/word cues.
Substitution drill
Question-Answer drill
True/False Repetition drill
Transformation drill
Verbs/tense, syntax
Recognize mistakes and correct
Guidelines for an Effective Presentation
Be well prepared with suitable, meaningful and easy-to-understand presentations. They should be memorable
Introduce the new target language in context
Involve ss from the beginning by setting the scene
Present one or two new structures at a time
Link old and new language
Check meaning, use, form and pronunciation
An effective presentation should take between 10 and 15 minutes.
Presentation on its own is not enough. It should be followed by practice
Some problems in teaching grammar
Students don’t understand or understand ambiguously and mechanically
Students can’t apply the grammatically knowledge studied for some kinds of tests
Students get mistakes in using grammar structure, verb tense/form, syntax …
Students can’t remember or misremember
Solution(1)
Practice makes perfect.
Consolidate & systematize the language ability
Caring more to train skills to do grammar tests for students
Students should make sure “must do – be wrong – be right”
Give mistake exercises for students to recognize and correct.
Students must remember their mistakes
Teachers need to train skills for students from mistakes
Solution
(2)
Caring more the revision & test correction classes
Setting up the useful “funny sayings” for studying memories as much as possible
Caring more the low students
