THE CONSTITUTION
What is the Constitution?
It`s the basic law from which the United States government gets all its power.
The Constitution defines three branches of Government:
1. The legislative branch is called congress: (makes laws)
+ The Senate
+ The House of Representatives.
- The job of congress is to pass laws.
2. The Executive branch. (enforces laws)
3. The Judicial branch.( interprets laws)
The president, the nation’s chief executive, must see that all national laws are carried out.
Cabinet consists of the heads of the departments of the executive branch: Secretaries of education, Defense and Agriculture.
The vice-president is the only other elected person in the executive branch. The vice-president`s most important function is to become president upon the death, resignation, or disability of the president.
The judicial branch consists of the federal courts. Federal laws are unconstitutional if they are not authorized by the Constitution or if they violate a person`s rights that are protected by the Constitution.
United States laws are in someway controlled or affected by on three branches of government – Congress makes them; the president approves and enforces them; and the courts determine their meaning and validity.

Probably the most significant portion of the Constitution is the Bill of Rights. Free speech is at the very heart of democracy.
Freedom of religion means that each person can belong to any church. Religious freedom also means that neither the federal government nor any state government can encourage or prevent the practice of religion. This concept has been referred to as the wall of separation between church and state.
ELECTIONS
The United States is the world’s oldest surviving federation. It is a constitutional republic, “in which majority rule is tempered by minority rights protected by law”.
The House of Representatives has 435 members, each representing a congressional district for a two-year term.
The president serves a four-year term and may be elected to office no more than twice. The president is not elected by direct vote
The Supreme Court, led by the Chief Justice of the United States, has nine members, who serve for life.
All laws and procedures of both state and federal governments are subject to review, and any law ruled in violation of the Constitution by the judicial branch is overturned.
The Constitution has been amended twenty-seven times; the first times ten amendments, which make up the Bill of Rights, and the Fourteenth Amendment form the central basis of individual rights in the United States.
PARTIES AND POLITICS
Polities in the United States have operated under a two-party system for virtually all of the country’s history.
For elective office at all levels, state-administered primary elections are held to choose the major party nominees for subsequent general elections.
All U.S presidents to date have been white men. Demoncrat Barack Obama won the forthcoming presidential election, he became the first African-American president.
Every member of the U.S Congress is a Democratic or a Republican expect two independent members or the Senate – one a dormer Democratic incumbent, the other a self-described socialist.
On the Tuesday following the first Monday in November, votes cast their ballots for president and vice-president. Some members of Congress and many state and local officials are also elected at this time.
