Introduction:
Bowing (ojigi): - important custom in Japan.

- Sumimasen Sorry
- Arigatou gozaimasu Thanks
…..Goodbye, Congratulation, goodnight…..
Different ways of bowing:
- Depend on: + social status or age.
+ boy or girl.
+ higher status or older bow deeper & longer.
How to bow
Kneeling bow:
In the past, some historical areas, some ceremonies
Put feet underneath yourself (kneel)
Place both hands in front of you, gather together, the distance about 10-20cm
Head and floor - about 10-15cm (sometimes head touches floor)
Standing bow:
put feet together
Men: keep hands straight at their side
women: place hands crossed in front of their body,
the right hand over the left, form a “V” shape
* keep the back straight, the eyes look downward
Different ways of bowing
Depend on social status or age:
higher status / older => both deeper and longer
The bow of nodding: in casual meeting, the same age
Bow of respect
Bow of respect
The lower you bow, the more respect you show
-> a common bow: 15 degrees : 1 or 2 seconds
-> a deeper bow: 30 degrees : 3 seconds
-> highest respect: 45 degrees
Bow of apology: deeper & longer than other types
- at least 3 seconds
- the depth, frequency & duration of bow -> sincerity of the apology & severity of offence
Bow of thanks follow the same pattern:
Bow of apology
Bow of thanks
To Japan:
make effort to bow lower & longer
Other ways:
1. Normally – ojigi: only first time => bow follows the standard
2. And, the following times => bow slightly to avoid : - troublesome
- waste of time
3. Ojigi – very important ceremony =>express elegantly & politely.
Ex : you run into a picture
of Paper & Bamboo Pupet
Ojigi – put where people &
vehicle are difficult to
transport because the
street is being executed
Ojigi means : ‘ so sorry for obstructing traffic ’
Conclusion :
=> Ojigi – so important -> when communicating w/ Japanese peo , don’t forget these rules
Thanks for your listening
