Reported Speech with infinitives
Group work: Match the sentences in A with their type in B
Ex1: “Keep quiet,” the teacher said to us.
The teacher told us to keep quiet.
In this case, we use the verb “tell” to report an imperative.
(tell + O + to inf.)
EX2: “You shouldn’t stay up too late,” my father said.
My father advised me not to stay up too late.
In this case we use the verb “advise” to report a piece of advice.
(advise + O + to inf.)

“Would you like to go out for a drink?” Mary said to him.
Mary invited him to go out for a drink.

Pair work: Match the sentence types in A with the reporting verbs in B
EXERCISE 1: Report these sentences with the words provided (Group work)

EXERCISE 2: Report these sentences with the verbs provided (Group work)
EXAMPLE:
“Be careful of strangers and don’t go out at night,” he said to us. (WARN)
He warned us to be careful and not to go out at night.
“You should not drink too much beer,” she said to him. (ADVISE)
She advised him not to drink too much beer.
2. “Come and see me whenever you want,” she said to me. (INVITE)
She invited me to come and see her whenever I wanted
3. “Please don’t smoke in my car,” Tom said to me. (ASK)
Tom asked me not to smoke in his car.
4. “Sue, give me your phone number,” he said. (TELL)
He told Sue to give him her phone number.
5. “Don’t forget to give the book back to Joe,” he said to her. (REMIND)
He reminded her to give the book back to Joe.
EXERCISE 3: Choose one of verbs in the box to report each of the sentences below.
EXAMPLE: “Don’t shoot,” he said to the soldiers
He ordered the soldiers not to shoot.
“Give me your homework,” the teacher said to us.
The teacher told us to give him/ her our homework.
2. “Could you lend me your bike for a day?” Peter said to Mary.
Peter asked Mary to lend him her bicycle for a day.
3. “I won’t do it again” he said.
He promised not to do it again.
4. “Would you like to have a drink with me?” Peter said to me.
Peter invited me to have a drink with him.
5. “You should give up smoking,” the doctor said to him.
