Structure : S + V(p)
Example: Last year, I traveled to Paris.
To describe a habit which stopped in the past
Usage:
To describe an action (or a series of actions) started and finished at a specific time in the past.
Example: I studied French when I was a child
Ex: Yesterday, I went out with my ex-girlfriend.
1/ Regular verbs: verbs that form its past tense by adding ed, we add –ed at the end of verbs.
[Want-wanted; belong-belonged; love-loved …]
Example: He wanted to eat out with his friends.
* Verbs ending with “y” : change the –y to i and add –ed [Try-tried; carry-carried; cry-cried …]
Ex: They carried lots of money when travelling to Thailand.
* Verbs ending with vowel + consonant: double the final consonant and add –ed [Plan-planned; stop-stopped; plug-plugged..]
Example: We stopped at the shop to buy some drinks
2/ Irregular verbs: that does not follow the usual rules for verb forms
Some irregular verbs:
Do-did;
Go-went;
Have-had;
See-saw;
Write-wrote ,
Say-said,
Speak-spoke….
* Some common expression used for past tense:
Yesterday/ yesterday evening … ;
Last month / last week….
2 year ago / in 2010…
a long time ago/
Example: Last year, I traveled to Paris.
