Gerund

GERUND (V-ING), TO-INFINITIVE (TO V1), BARE-INFINITIVE (V1)
1. Gerund:
a. after TO BE / function as subject of a sentence / after possesive adjs. (my, his, her, …)
Ex: - My hobby is playing soccer with my friends.
- Playing soccer is my hobby.
- Do you mind my using your phone?
b. common verbs followed by gerunds: avoid, love, enjoy, finish, keep, mind, postpone, suggest, consider, practise, stop, try, etc.
Ex: - I enjoy playing soccer with my friends.
c. Common expression with GO + V-ing
go camping, go dancing, go shopping, go fishing, go swimming, go sightseeing
d. prep. + gerund
Ex: My father has given up smoking for ten years.
e. It’s no use | can’t help/bear/stand | It’s (not) worth, there’s no point, etc.
Ex: There’s no point waiting for him. He won’t come for sure.

2. to-inf.
a. expect, hope, want, decide, plan, agree, threaten, refuse, etc. (S + V + to-inf.)
Ex: We decided to leave when they came in the room.
b. want, ask, advise, tell, request, order, etc. (S + V + O + to-inf.)
Ex: They told me to leave the house.
c. be + pleased/willing/delighted/happy/glad/eager/ready, etc. + to-inf.
Ex: They were delighted to hear the news.

3. Bare-infinitive:
a. after modal verbs (can, could, may, might, should, etc.)
b. after some common structures:
- had better (‘d better) + V1
- would rather (‘d rather) + V1
c. after make, let
Ex: They let their childrend go out at night. / They make their children study a lot.
