Objectives:
Skills: Reading comprehension skills (guessing the meaning of words in context, reading for the main and specific ideas)
Language: Words related to ways of socializing
Lesson contents and facts
Number of students: 40 students
Formal class setting with two rows of desks and a small aisle
No modern teaching equipments like computers or projector
Preferred learning styles: Communicative
Learning environment
The material: not at the right level; not suitable
The tasks are a bit hard and boring
The tasks don’t suit the learners’ learning styles. Learners need more practice.
Reasons for application
Keep the original text in the course book
Change and simplify some tasks
What /how to adapt
Before you read:
- Give a real social situation and ask for students’ response.
Students brainstorm ways of socializing (teachers can make it competitive with group work and games)
How to implement
While you read:
Task 2 should be done first
Task 1 should be skipped and replaced it by a matching exercise (words and meaning of the words)
Task 3 can be made more simple with MCQ or T/F exercises
After you read:
- Students mime to perform the meanings of whistling and hand-clapping in Vietnamese culture.
