Different parts of the sentence can be emphasised in this way:
- It is Sue Strobel who will see Dave Stuart at three p.m. (Subject focus)
- It is Dave Stuart that Sue Strobel will see at three p.m. (Object focus)
- It is at three p.m that Sue Strobel will see Dave Stuart . (Adverbial focus)

Cleft constructions, then, exhibit the pattern:
It + be + focus + that/ who+ clause

(This is called a CLEFT SENTENCE because the original sentence has been divided (or "cleft") into two clauses)

To emphasize Subject, we can begin the sentence with the structure:
“It+ is/ was+ subject+ that/ who+ S+ V+ O
Note:
- We can use who (person), which (things) to replace that when we want to emphasize Subject .
When Subject is a plural noun, we have to use a plural verb in the relative clause.
Example: The man gave her the book.
It was the man who/that gave her the book.
