1. ROUTINES
Think about your daily life. Do you follow the same read or work every day? Do you sit in the same place in class? When you get dressed, do you always put the same leg or arm in first? You probably do, because we all have routines in our lives.
Routines save time and energy because you do them without thinking, that`s why they are so important in the morning when your brain isn`t active. Here`s Jo talking about her morning routine.
`Oh yes. I always do exactly the same things. I wake up at seven o`clock every morning, but I don`t get quarter past seven. I switch on the radio and listen to the news. Then I go to the bathroom and I brush my teeth. I have a shower and dry my hair. Then I choose my clothes and I get dressed. I don`t eat anything for breakfast. I just have a cup of coffee. Then I go to work. Yes, it`s always the same.`
Routines are very useful. but they also make you uncreative. So sometimes it`s a good idea to break your routines. Get out of bed on the opposite side. Listen to a different radio station. Take a different route to work. Eat something different for breakfast. Change your routine. You never know, it could change your life.
2. POLLUTION
A combination of sewage, salt, air pollution, sun, sand and wind may destroy the huge statue on the outskirts of Cairo. This statue of the sun god has the body of a lion and the face of a human being. It is five thousand years old, but it is too badly damaged to be completely saved. The statue has already been dug out of the sand three times. However, the latest problems are much more serious.
Firstly, there are no proper drains and water pipes in the neighborhood, and the underground passages round the statue have become blocked. Too much water has been running into the stone statue for several years. As a result, tiny pieces of salt have been left on the stone and have damaged it.
Secondly, air pollution from the increasing amount of traffic in Cairo is also destroying the ancient statue. The air is so full of poisonous gases that it is making the stone crumble and decay even faster.
Thirdly, the statue is being damaged by extremes of temperature, For example, although the air is very cold at night, during the day the stone of the statue becomes very hot under the strong sun. Other natural forces such as severe sandstorms also attack the statue.
Finally, the tourists who visit the statue every day also cause a lot of damage.
3. ADVERTISEMENTS
Advertisements are very important in the modern world. Often your T-shirt or jeans show the name of the company that made them. This is a popular form of advertising. Firstly, a special picture or symbol, called logo, is sometimes used. You see logos on many different products. The idea of a logo is that whenever you see it, you think of that product or company.
Secondly, many people like to buy a product because it is made by a certain company. Some people only buy a product that is made by a famous company. People wear clothes and carry bags that have a famous label to show that they are fashionable and have good taste.
Thirdly, it is very common to see advertisements on TV and hear them on the radio. Most advertisements are only a few seconds long but very attractive. Sometimes, the advertiser uses a slogan because it is easy to say and easy to remember. The idea of advertisements is to try to make you buy the product. They sometimes show rich and famous people using that product.
Finally, the message is, if you want to feel rich and famous, and then buy this product.
4. My best friend
In my life. I am lucky to have a lot of friends but I admire most is Long. Long is the same age with me, he is my classmate. I spend most of my time with him. He is tall and thin and has short black hair. He is sociable, humorous, and helpful. Especially he is a good student. When I was a young boy. I and Long used to go to school by my bicycle. In the evening we used to do our homework together. He used to guide me how to do difficult exercises. He is good at English, Math, and literature. His house is next to my house. His family is very poor. His mother and his father are farmers; they work hard all day on a farm. After school I and Long used to help his parents housework such as cooked the meals, cleaned the house, washed clothes or looked after his brothers and sisters.
Now I am a policeman and Long is a doctor but we always keep in touch. He is the best friend who I admire most.
