Effects of gambling on family and society
Topic
Outline
Betting and playing games of chance for money.
Comparison with dueling
Its social effects are evil.
Discourages steady industry.
Becomes an enslaving habit.
Produces unhealthy excitement.
Often leads to theft and other crimes.
My views on gambling and its effects on family.
Gambling is properly playing games of chance, such as cards, pitch-and-toss, etc…, for money. But it also includes betting, which is staking money on an uncertain future event, such as a horse-race.
Comparison with dueling
Perhaps a comparison with gambling with dueling will help us to see why gambling is an evil. In a duel, as in a game of chance, both parties willingly agree to run a risk. In gambling they risk the loss of their money; in a duel, the loss of their lives.
Its social effects are evil.
Discourages steady industry holding out before men the hope of getting rich quickly and easily without work
Becomes an enslaving habit as strong as the drink craving: and frequently it leads not only to his ruin, but to the misery of his family that depends on him
Produces unhealthy excitement produces an unhealthy and restless excitement in men’s minds .
Often leads to theft and other crimes often ends in theft and embezzlement, and even crimes of violence.
My views on gambling
Gambling is a social ill. Together with alcoholism and drug addiction, they constitute the major problems that society is facing now.
Shattered lives, broken homes, poor health, poverty and overwhelming problems follow the person who becomes addicted to gambling. It is definitely something to be avoided.
