HUMMING INSECTS
On hot summer days, you will often hear insects humming in the trees. One insect you may hear is the cicada.
Cicadas lay their eggs in twigs. They cut little holes in the wood. Then they put their eggs in them. Soon the baby cicadas are born. They fall to the ground. They get their food from roots and plants near the tree.
When they grow up, they fly into trees to make their nests. It is the father cicada who makes the humming noise. He hums when it is time to start a family.
Cicadas are not insects that we like. The holes they make will often hurt a tree.
