English has for more than a century and a half been called a world language. The number of people who speak it as their mother tongue has been estimated at about four hundred million. It is recognized as an official language in countries where 1,5 billion people live. In China, the importance attached to learning English is such that a televised teaching course drew audiences of up to one million. But this spread of English throughout the world is relatively recent. In the late sixteenth century English was spoken by just under five million people. The arrival of English in North America was the key in its worldwide expansion. The United States is a huge commercial market and this has tended to promote the English language in many other nations. About eighty per cent of the data stored on the world`s computers is believed to be in English and nowadays insufficient knowledge of English can be a problem in business.

In Britain there is a holiday now which people call Mother`s Day. In the old days many girls from working - class families in towns and cities and from farmers` families in the countries worked in rich houses. They had to do all the housework and their working day was usually very long, they often worked on Sundays, too.
Once a year, it was usually one Sunday in March, they could visit their mothers. They went home on that day and brought presents for their mothers and for other members of their families. They could stay at home only one day, and then they went back to their work. People call that day Mothering Day or Mothering Sunday.
Later workers at the factories and girls who worked in the houses of rich families received one free day a week, and Mothering Day became Mother`s Day. It is the last Sunday in March.

Hướng dẫn thi nghe
1- Giám thị chuẩn bị cátsét hoặc máy tính có loa tốt, có nguồn điện ổn định, thử trước bằng đĩa có tiếng (không được dùng đĩa thi nghe để thử), chọn vị trí đặt cátsét thuận lợi nhất cho việc nghe của thí sinh.
2- Giám thị phát đề cho thí sinh và dành 05 phút cho thí sinh đọc các yêu cầu của đề bài, 05 phút này không tính vào thời gian làm bài. Sau đó giám thị bật đĩa cho thí sinh nghe (thi sinh chỉ nghe hết một lần, giám thị không phải tua, hoặc bật lại, không phải giải thích gì thêm
3- Trong khi nghe nếu đĩa có trục trặc thì thay thế bằng đĩa dự phòng.
4- Thí sinh được ghi chép những thông tin nghe được trong khi thi nghe.
