II. READING: (10 P)
Part 1: Read the passage. (2.4 P)
All languages have rules for forming words and for ordering those words in meaningful sentences. In written languages, meaning is expressed through a system of characters and rules for combining those characters. In spoken languages, meaning is expressed through a system of sounds and rules for combining those sounds. Word order is more important in English than it is in some languages, such as Russian.
Like other languages English is always changing, but it changes very slowly. People invent new words, borrow words from other languages, and change the meaning of words as needed. For example, the English word byte was invented by computer specialists in 1959. The word tomato was borrowed from Nahuatl, an American Indian language spoken in Mexico. The word meat once referred to food in general. People learn English as well as languages by listening, copying what they hear, and using the language. Most school children learn their first language easily-and sometimes other languages as well.

REPORT
I asked Gary what sort of music he liked, and he told me that he had always liked jazz. In fact he said he played in a jazz band called Sax Appeal. When I asked him where the band played, he told me they mainly played in small clubs. I asked him if he had ever played a Shakespearian role, and he told me that he had. He had played Othello in Stratford in 1989, and he had enjoyed it very much. Finally I asked him if he ever wanted to direct a play, and he told me that he hoped to one day, but he didn’t know when it could happen because he was so busy acting.
