MOUNT EVEREST
Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is on the frontier between Nepal and Tibet. Since very few people used to travel to this part of the world, Mount Everest wasn’t discovered until about 1850. In 1858, Mount Everest was named after Sir George Everest, the Surveyor General in India. Part of a mountain range known as the Himalayas, Mount Everest is higher than any other mountains. It is almost nine thousand metres high. The first people to conquer Mount Everest were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The expedition was led by Colonel John Hunt. After struggling for ten days against the bitter cold, Hillary and Tenzing finally stood on the summit on May 29, 1953.
