Jeans are the most popular kind of clothing in the world. They are popular almost everywhere, in Japan, France, Indonesia and Brazil. Rich people and poor people wear them. Young people and even some old people wear them, too. In the United States, they are the only kind of traditional clothes. In other countries, young people wear them because they want to look modern. Jeans are the sign of youth and independence.
The story of Jeans started almost two hundred years ago. People in Genoa, Italy, made pants. The pants were called “jeans”. In 1850, a salesman in California began selling pants made of canvas. His name was Levi Strauss. Because they were so strong, “Levi’s pants” became popular with gold miners, farmers and cowboys. Many years later, Levis began making his pants with blue cotton cloth called denim. Soon after, factory workers in the United States and Europe began wearing jeans.
