In Britain, people enjoy entertaining at home. They often invite friends for a meal , a party or just for coffee and conversation. People who know each other very well - close friends, family or neighbors call at each other`s house without invitation, but usually an invitation is needed. Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their home.
" Would you like to come for dinner on Saturday?"
" We`re having a party on Friday. Can you come?"
The replies are " Thanks. We`d love to. What time?"
or " I`m sorry . I can`t come. I`m afraid"
Sometimes, the British use the expressions that sound like invitations but which are not real invitations. For examples:
" You must come over for a drink sometimes."
" Let`s go out for a meal one of these days."
These are just polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations because they don`t mention a specific time or day. They just show that the perosn is trying to be friendly and the answers to these expressions are" Yes, that would be nice." Or " OK, yes, thanks"
So next time when you hear what sounds like an invitation, listen carefully. Is it a real invitation or is the person just being friendly?
