II) Presentation
1.The past simple tense
+ Model sentences and uses:
a. He met her yesterday
b.We watched T.V last night => an action happen in the past with definite time.
c. I often did the morning exercises last year. => an action sb often did in the past. d.They lived in Haiphong from 2002 to 2004.=> an action sb did during
a period of time in the past.
- Ask Ss to change above sentences into negative and interrogative.
=>Form: S + V(past) (+)
S + did not + V_inf
Did + S + V_inf ?




V(past): - tobe: was, were
- regular verb + ed
- irregular verbs (learn by heart)

*) Words and phrases of time which are used in the past simple tense:
Last (week), yesterday, the day before yesterday, (two days) ago, in (2002)...
*) The pronunciation of "ed":
3 ways to pronounce: / id /, / t / and / d /
+ / id / : With the words end in sounds : / t, d /
Eg: need -> needed, want -> wanted, decide -> decided, start -> started............
+ / t / : With the words end in sounds : / f, k, p, s, s, tS, ks /
Eg: wash -> washed, watch -> watched, fax -> faxed, book -> booked, stop ->
stopped, laugh -> laughed
/ d / : With the words end in other sounds.
Eg: play -> played, bath -> bathed, plan -> planned, offer -> offered, call -> called...
2. The past simple tense and modal "could" with "wish".
*Look at these situations.
a. I do not know many English words. (I need more words to talk to my friends)
=> I wish I knew more English words.
b. You don`t have a computer at home so you cannot get access to the internet (You need a computer at home)
=> I wish I had a computer at home to get access to the internet.
I wish + (that) +S + V(past simple)

* Meaning: Ước
* Form:

* Use: To wish ST which is not true at the present.
*Note: "were" goes with all personal pronouns.
I wish = if only (giá mà)
Eg: I wish I could play the guitar. = If only I could play the guitar.

I wish I didn`t have to do this job. = If only I didn`t have to do this job
She wishes she were a doctor.
