Lesson 2: defining and non-defining relative clauses
* whose:
Mệnh đề quan hệ là mệnh đề phụ dùng làm bổ ngữ cho danh từ đứng trước nó. Mệnh đề quan hệ đứng ngay sau danh từ mà nó bổ nghĩa. Mệnh đề quan hệ thường được nối với mệnh đề chính bằng các đại từ quan hệ: who, which, whom, that, whose, where…
Được dùng để chỉ sự sở hữu cho danh từ chỉ người và vật đứng trước (thay thế cho các tính từ sở hữu: my, our, their, his,her,its.)
Ex: Laura is a woman whose husband is an artist.
* where:
Là đại từ quan hệ được dùng để chỉ nơi chốn.
Ex: The hotel where we stayed was expensive.
1. Defining relative clauses: ( Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định)
Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định là mệnh đề cần thiết cho ý nghĩa của câu. Nếu bỏ nó
đi thì ý nghĩa của câu sẽ không rõ ràng.
Ex: The book which you lent me was very interesting.
Mệnh đề không xác định là mệnh đề không cần thiết cho ý nghĩa của câu. Nó có tác dụng bổ sung thêm thông tin cho câu.Khi bỏ nó đi thì ý nghĩa của câu không bị thay đổi. Mệnh đề không xác định được tách với mệnh đề chính bằng dấu phẩy(,)
Ex: My brother John, who lives in LonDon, is a doctor.
Note: Không dùng “that” trong mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định.
