Idioms of”dogs”in English and Vietnamese
Language is the most typical character of each country. Especially, through contrastive linguistic,learners know much more about people’s language,then understand culture and lifestyle in that country.Idiom is an important part in language,which we can not deny.It reflects the life in generally from the past,the present and even the future.Idioms of dogs in English and in Vietnamese is an exciting part which learners are eagle to search.Now,in this research,we will  use two-way technique to contrast linguistic between idioms of dog in English and Vietnamese as:
        - Overview of  idiom in english and in vietnamese.
        - The similarities and differences between idioms of dog in English and in Vietnamese.
        - Example to illustrate.
Understanding idioms in English and in Vietnamese helps learners a lot in studying and especially in translating.
 
 
    
 
 
                        

I. Overview of study:
I.1.Contrastive linguistic:is a practice-oriented linguistic approach that seeks to describe the differences and similarities between a pair of languages .The focus may be on general or on language specific feature.The study may be theoretical,without any immediate application or it may be applied,carried out for a specific purpose.       
  I.2.Idiom: is a phrase where the words together have a meaning that is different from the dictionary definition of the individual word. Phraseology:is the study of set expressions called phraseological units.These set expressions are completely or partially idiomatic and reproduced in speech as ready-made units.
 II. Development.
 II.1.Idioms of dog in English:
 -Idioms use dog to present feature of thing:
a.+ Dog-eat-dog(thương trường như chiến trường) that means many people are competing for the same things,like good jobs.Someone is ready or willing to fight and hurt others to get what one wants.               + Eg:It is a”dog-eat-dog”world outside the father said to his young son.
b.+It rained cats and dogs(mưa như trút nước)The rain was so heavy.It seemed that all water was pouring down.It might cause the flood.
+Eg:I couldn’t go out.”It rained cats and dogs”.
-Idioms use dog’s behaviors,characteristics to compare with people.
a.+ Dog’chance:describes people who are always free,happy.They have no troubles or responsibilities.They can do anything,can come and go they please,even sleep allday,and never have to work.
+ Eg:He never had a dog’s chance.
           b.+ Dog’life(nhục như chó)It is the opposite meaning with”dog’chance”.It means that they are people who are unhappy.They have to work all day.
+ Eg:He had to lead a dog’s life.
- Idioms use dog to tell experiences of daily life
a.+To fight a cat and dog life(cãi nhau như chó với mèo): In the fact,cat and dog are animals which are invalid.They often beat each other..this describe people who argue very often.
+ Eg:Our hero and his wife get on very well together.They don’t lead a cat and dog life.
 b.+To help lame of dogs over stiles:to help someone deal/solve their problem,overcome the problem.
+Eg:you are so kind to help lame of dogs over stiles.I wish best wishes for you.
                       II.2.Idioms of dog in Vietnamese
 - Idioms use “dog” to present feature of thing.
                     a.+”Nhục như chó”:means that the life is as hard as dog’s life.
 -Idioms use dog’s behaviors,characteristics to compare with people
a.+”Chó cùng dứt giậu”:When a person is in the situation of no exit,he/she will dare to do anything whatever it is good or not.At that time,he/she us reckless.
         b.+”Chó cắn áo rách”:The idiom reflects the difficult situation which  seems no exit.More and more difficulties he/she has to face.He/she meets many challenge in a period of time.
+Eg:He has got the disease for a long time.Only his father took care of him.However,now,his father dies=>“Chó cắn áo rách”.
         c.+”Chó chê mèo lắm lông”:the person who likes to criticize others althouh he/she is not so good.This idiom shows dissatisfied attitude.
                -Idioms use dog to tell the experiences of daily life
a.+ “lơ láo như chó thấy thóc”:people have indifferent attitude,no attention to thing which is not related to his/herself.
b.+”Cãi nhau như chó với mèo”:(to lead a cat and dog life)It shows the relationship without peace among people.
