2. Three types of compound noun:
a. Separated:
The two
words are
written
separately.

For example:

= Seat belt
/’sit bɛlt/

Alarm /?`la:m/

+ Clock /klɒk/

=
Alarm clock
/ǝ’la:mklɒk/

/’reinbəʊ/

b. Joined:
The two
words are
written as one.

For example:

Sand /sænd/ + Glass /glæs/

=
Sandglass
/’sænd glæs/

=
Moonlight /’mu:n lait/

Moon /mu:n/
+
Light /lait/
Apple /’æpl/
.

+ Pie /pai/

= Apple-pie/’æpl pai/
C. Hyphenated

The two words
are linked by a
hyphen.
For example:
E.g
+ Nest /nest/

Bird /bɛ:d/

= Bird-nest
/’bɛ:d nest/

Police /pə‘li:st/ + Office /’ɒfis/

=
Police-office
/pə‘li:st ’ɒfis/
3. Note

* Compound nouns often have a meaning that
is different from the two separated words.

* Stress is important in pronunciation.

* In compound nouns, the stress usually
falls on the first syllable.

For example:
Apple-pie /’æpl pai/
Moonlight /’mu:n lait/

Unfortunately, there is no definite way to determine how compound nouns are written.

Then, how do you know when to separate, join or hyphenate words?
