COMPARISON
IDENTIFYING SHORT AND LONG ADJECTIVES
SHORT ADJECTIVES
a.Monosyllable adjectives
Long, short, tall, small, cold
b. Two-syllable adjectives ending in –Y, -ER, -ET, -LE, -OW
PrettY, clevER, quiET, gentLE, narrOW
c. Two-syllable adjectives stressed on the second syllable
poLITE, seVERE, proFOUND
d. Some particular adjectives
Common, handsome, pleasant
LONG ADJECTIVES
a. Adjectives with two or more syllables
Selfish, difficult, beautiful, wonderful…
b. Adjectives in participle form
Boring, bored, excited, exciting….
NOTES: with some two-syllable adjectives we can use either “ER” or “MORE”: common, cruel (độc ác), gentle (hiền lành), narrow (hẹp), pleasant (dễ chịu), polite, remote (xa xôi), simple, stupid, subtle (khôn khéo, tinh tế), etc.
DEGREES OF COMPARISON
EQUAL DEGREE
AS + ADJ/ ADV + AS
He is as tall as a giraffe.
Tom runs as quickly as a cheetah.
NOT+ AS/ SO+ ADJ/ ADV+ AS
This room is not as/ so big as that one.
SUPERIOR DEGREE
short ADJ/ ADV- ER+ than
He is taller than his brother.
The rabit can run faster than the turtle.
more+ long ADJ/ ADV + than
She is more beautiful than her sister.
Tom drives more carefully than his wife.
INTERFERIOR DEGREE
less + ADJ/ ADV + than
This car is less expensive than that one.
Joe drives less carefully than Tom.
SUPERLATIVE DEGREE
the+ short ADJ-EST + in (place).../ of...
He is the tallest man in the class.
The most + long ADJ/ ADV + in/ of
He is the most intelligent of the students.
She smiles the most gracefully of all the girls.
