Exercise 2: Read the passage then answer the questions that follow:
( Scientists have established that influenza viruses taken from man can cause the disease in animals. In addition, man can catch the disease from animals. In fact, a great number of wild birds seem to carry the viruses without showing any evidences of illnesses. Some scientists conclude that a large family of influenza viruses may have evolved in the bird kingdom, a group that has been on the earth 100 million years and is able to carry the viruses without contracting the disease. There is even convincing evidence to show that virus strains are transmitted from place to place and from continent to continent by migrating birds.
It is known that two influenza viruses can recombine when both are present in an animal at the same time. The result of such recombination is a great variety of strains containing different H and N spikes. This raises the possibility that a human influenza virus can recombine with an influenza virus from a lower animal to produce an entirely new spike. Research is underway to determine if that is the way that major new strains come into being. Another possibility is that two animal influenza strains may recombine in a pig, for example, to produce a new strain which is transmitted to man.
1. According to the passage, scientists have discovered that influenza viruses _______.
A. cause ill health in animals. B. do not always cause symptom in birds.
C. are rarely present in wild birds. D. change when transmitted from animals to man.
2. What is known about the influenza viruses?
A. It was first found in a group of very old birds. B. All the different strains can be found in the wild birds.
C. It existed over 100 million years ago. D. It can survive in many different places.
3. According to the passage, a great variety of influenza strains can appear when_____.
A. H and N spikes are produced. B. Animal and bird viruses are combined.
C. Dissimilar types of viruses recombined. D. Two viruses of the same type are contracted.
4. New strains of viruses are transmitted to man by _____.
A. a type of wild pig. B. diseased lower animals.
C. a group of migrating birds. D. a variety of means.
5. All of the following are ways of producing new strains of influenza EXCEPT_____.
A two influenza viruses in the same animal recombining. C. two animal viruses recombining.
B. animal viruses recombining with human viruses. D. two animal viruses recombining in a human.
6. The passage is the most suitable for which of the following subjects?
A. The History of Medicine. B. Medical Science.
C. Botanical Science. D. Life Study.
( In sport the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are not as strong as men. That at least is why people say. Women are called “the weaker sex”, or if men want to please them, “the fair sex”. But boys and girls are taught together at school and university. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. are women’s body really weaker?
The fastest man can run a mile in under 4 minutes. The best woman needs 4.5 minutes. Women’s times are always slower than men’s, but some facts are surprising. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 meters in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only 16. the first “Tarzan” in films was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 meters was 4 minutes 59.1 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up. Conditions are very different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seemed sad that sport has such problems. Life can be very complete when there are two separate sexes!
1. Women are called “the weaker sex” because_______.
A. women do as much as men. B. people think women are weaker than men.
C. sport is easier for men than for women. D. in sport the two sexes are always together.
2. Which of the following is true?
A. Boys and girls study separate everywhere. B. Women do not run or swim in races with men.
C. Famous Prime Ministers are women. D. Men can expect
