Articles Mạo từ (a/an, the) là những từ hạn định phổ biến nhất. I`m sure I read an essay or a story by Theroux, but I can`t remember the title. Demonstratives (từ chỉ định) Từ chỉ định có những dạng thức khác nhau khi đứng trước danh từ số ít (this, that) và danh từ số nhiều (these, those). • That car was speeding. • These people were here first. • I forgot those papers. Chúng ta có thể sử dụng từ chỉ định làm đại từ: • Here are the files. Those are older. These are new. Khi nói về thời gian, nơi chốn và con người, chúng ta dùng this/these cho những thứ gần với chúng ta, và that/those cho những thứ cách xa hơn. • I`m busy these days. • That party was great! • I hated those meetings. • This classroom is better than that awful place we had before with those tiny windows. • Look at these people in this photo - they`re crazy. • Do you remember that weird teacher we had? Chúng ta cũng có thể sử dụng that/those để chỉ những gì đã xảy ra và this/these cho những gì sắp xảy ra.

Khi nói về một bộ phận cơ thể đã được xác định sẵn, chúng ta thường sử dụng the (chứ không dùng tính từ sở hữu) trong cụm giới từ. Bộ phận đó được xem như vị trí, chứ không phải vật sở hữu. • One man was shot in the leg. • Robin leaned forward and kissed me on the cheek.
